Description

The official currency of the Republic of Korea (South Korea). The ₩ symbol comes from the first letter of the Korean word "won" (원) in Latin transcription.

History

The modern won was introduced in 1962, replacing the hwan. The ₩ symbol was standardized in South Korea and represents the letter W with two horizontal lines.
