Description

The official currency of the Dominican Republic. Uses the $ symbol but is denoted as RD$ or DOP to distinguish it. The name "peso" is historically linked to Spanish colonial period.

History

Introduced in 1844 after independence from Haiti. Replaced the Haitian gourde. Modern peso with floating exchange rate introduced in 1947.
