Description

The official currency of Costa Rica. The symbol ₡ was designed based on the dollar sign $ with the addition of the letter C (from "colón"). Named after Christopher Columbus.

History

Introduced in 1896, replacing the Costa Rican peso. Named after Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón in Spanish). The ₡ symbol has been used since the currency's creation.
