Description

The official currency of Bangladesh. The symbol ৳ comes from Bengali script and represents the first letter of the word "taka" (ট) in the Bengali alphabet.

History

Introduced in 1972 after independence from Pakistan, replacing the Pakistani rupee. The name "taka" was historically used for silver coins in the region.
